Hi

We had bed bugs a couple of years ago. We picked them up from a hotel we went to that obviously didn't have good hygiene. You'll probably need to get exterminators in if they're everywhere. We only had them in the bedroom so we let off an insecticide smoke bomb (you can buy them off the internet), cleaned the carpets, washed all our clothes, binned any fabric I didn't have to keep, and used a steam gun to blast the mattress and all the cracks in the bed frame. It's easy to see where they're living as they leave black specks of poo.

Hope that's useful. They're the most disgusting things and I always check the hotel rooms we stay in now.

Well done for going to the papers. After everything else that's happened on Orchard Park, an outbreak of bed bugs here is a really good thing to let everyone in Cambridge know about. What did you expect your landlord to do? Broken plumbing fair enough, dirty little bugs, probably something you're better to sort out yourself. You're clearly good with a computer - in fact there's one in the background of the picture of you in the paper. Perhaps you could use it next time to work out a way to deal with the problem that doesn't involve the local media? If my kids get Head Lice I generally don't consider getting my landlord to sort it out, nor write a letter to The Times.

i had hoped my landlords would take action to make the other residents have their homes inspected and cleansed so i dont have to live continually like this. As to compare with head lice when my children went to school and their was an outbreak a letter was sent home informing all parents there was a problem and to check your childs hair!! This is all im trying to do let people know theres a problem so they can take the necessary action as my landlords wont.

If your only aim in going to the paper was to let your neighbours know... wouldn't a quick visit or note through their letter box have been quicker and guarantee they saw it? Currently you're relying on them getting the paper which a lot of residents probably do not

Cor now wouldnt you think i'd of thought of that!! Good job i did eh and after doing just that, posting letters through all the flat doors in my block, it was a general decision of the tenants in the block to go to the papers.

I think what people are trying to understand is what good you hoped going to the papers would bring apart from trying to shame your landlord into paying to have the bed bugs removed. Especially if as you say above, you had already notified all the residents in your block.

The concern of fellow residents is that Orchard Park gets a lot of bad press and a lot of it is undeserved. If residents add to that bad press (without good reason) then it's often hard to be sympathetic towards them. We'd all like to promote Orchard Park as a nice place to come and live in the aim that it continues to be seen as that - and not an unfinished and bug infested estate as some might infer from the current impression often presented by the press.

I know it's a hardline ... if rats had got into your flat through shoddy skirting boards then yes complain to your landlord until they get rid of the rats and fix the skirting. If you were infested by flies because the communal areas weren't being cleaned then complain at the maintenance contractors. But unfortunately bed bugs could have come from anywhere and probably didn't get in because of a fault in the building. So it sort of has to come down to you to clear them out yourself.

your really not up with whats going on. there has already been rats in the flats and the residents have been told they would die off!! Another resident has had exterminators in to rid them of mice. We've had gypsys dumping horses on waste land this is a lovely place to live. its about time something was done.

so are you suggesting that i should offer to pay for all the flats in my block to be treated because just i alone treating my home will not make the problem go away i will without doubt have to have the enviroment in again within a few months and then a few months after that unless the whole block is treated.

Rats and mice - Common problem in any urban area.
A horse dumped on a field. More the road that Orchard Park really. Unslightly horse, don't get me wrong but not a major problem.

Overall if they're the biggest problems I think we're doing ok. What's the alternative? Pay for an estate rat catcher? I think the Pied Piper's probably on holiday at the moment.

And again the problem is not with you sorting out your problem. And genuinely well done for letting your neighbours know. Everyone else is just annoyed that you felt the need to do it through the paper.

Fellow Orchard Park inhabitants,

I am hoping you might be able to help me with a dilemma I have. I appreciate this may not be the best forum to seek advice but here goes:-

I think I might have pubic lice. Should I complain to my landlord or contact the Cambridge Evening News instead? Surely one of these can help. I really am at my wits end.

Thanks in advance.
